Institute for Surgical Research
The Institute for Surgical Research is a modern research institute, conducting molecular medicine research aimed at the clinicial activities at the Rikshospitalet. The collaboration with the hospital is emphasized through the fact that the group leaders have clinical engagements at the hospital, in addition to their university affiliation.
The Institute also collaborates with many clinics and researchers both nationally and abroad. Two of the group leaders - the professors Langmoen and Nordsletten - have their clinical main position at Ullevål University Hospital.
The Institute for Surgical Research is also responsible for extensive courses and training within keyhole surgery, micro surgery as well as invasive procedures for pediatricians.
Those employed at the university take part in the education of medical doctors.
The clinical profile and the considerable competence within molecular biology give the institute especially qualifications for translational research.
From the start in 1966 more than 140 doctoral theses have originated from the institute. The research has contributed to new treatment routines and diagnostic tools.
The Institute for Surgical Research is both a university institute at the University in Oslo as well as a department at Rikshospitalet.
Professor Ansgar O. Aasen has since 1991 been head of the Institute for Surgical Research.
The Institute has 9 research groups, working within the following fields:
